The Story of Blogger

Blogger was started by a tiny company in San Francisco called Pyra Labs in August of 1999. This was in the midst of the dot-com boom. But we weren't exactly a VC-funded, party-throwing, foosball-in-the-lobby-playing, free-beer-drinking outfit. (Unless it was other people's free beer.)

We were three friends, funded by doing annoying contract web projects for big companies, trying to make our own grand entrance onto the Internet landscape. What we were originally trying to do doesn't matter so much now. But while doing it, we created Blogger, more or less on a whim, and thought — Hmmm... that's kinda interesting.

Blogger took off, in a small way, and eventually a bigger way, over a couple years. We raised a little money (but stayed small). And then the bust happened, and we ran out of money, and our fun little journey got less fun. We narrowly survived, not all in one piece, but kept the service going the whole time (most days) and started building it back up.

Things were going well again in 2002. We had hundreds of thousands of users, though still just a few people. And then something no one expected happened: Google wanted to buy us. Yes, that Google

We liked Google a lot. And they liked blogs. So we were amenable to the idea. And it worked out nicely.

Now we're a small (but slightly bigger than before) team in Google focusing on helping people have their own voice on the web and organizing the world's information from the personal perspective. Which has pretty much always been our whole deal.

For more on Google, check google.com. (Also good for searching.)

Advertise Your Business on Google

No matter what your budget, you can display your ads on Google and the advertising network. Pay only if people click your ads.

How It Works:

You create your adsYou create ads and choose keywords, which are words or phrases related to your business

Your ads appear on Google:
When people search on Google using one of your keywords, your ad may appear next to the search results. Now you're advertising to an audience that's already interested in you. You attract customersPeople can simply click your ad to make a purchase or learn more about you. You don't even need a webpage to get started - Google will help you create one for free. It's that easy!

Why it works:

Google AdWords offers you :

Targeted reach
Now you can advertise to people searching on Google. Even if you already appear in Google's search results, AdWords can help you target new audiences on Google and the advertising network.

Greater control
You can edit your ads and adjust your budget until you get the results you want. You can also display a variety of ad formats and even target your ads to specific languages and geographic locations.

Measurable value
There's no minimum spending requirement or time commitment. And with the cost-per-click option, you're only charged if people click your ads. This means every dollar of your budget goes toward bringing new prospects to you.

Costs and payment
Concerned about costs? Don't worry—AdWords puts you in complete control of your spending.

Set your budget
There's no minimum spending requirement--the amount you pay for AdWords is up to you. You can, for instance, set a daily budget of five dollars and a maximum cost of ten cents for each click on your ad.Avoid guessworkWe provide keyword traffic and cost estimates so you can make informed decisions about choosing keywords and maximizing your budget.

Pay only for results
You're charged only if someone clicks your ad, not when your ad is displayed.Payment options vary by country and currency.

For local businesses

Local and regional targeting
Set your ads to appear only to people searching in a particular state, city, or region. Now it's easy to target online customers within, say, 25 miles of your front door.

Web template

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Blog Templates)

A web template is a tool used to separate content from presentation in web design, and for mass-production of web documents. It is a basic component of a web template system.

Web templates can be used to set up any type of website. In its simplest sense, a web template operates similarly to a form letter for use in setting up a website.

[edit] Template Uses

Web templates can be used by any individual or organization to set up their website. Once a template is purchased or downloaded, the user will replace all generic information included in the web template with their own personal, organizational or product information. Templates can be used to:

*Display personal information or daily activities as in a blog.

*Sell products on-line.

*Display information about a company or organization.

*Display family history.

*Display a gallery of photos.

*Place music files such as mp3 on line for play through a web browser.

*Place videos on-line for public viewing.

*To setup a private login area on-line.

Effective separation

A common goal among experienced web developers is to develop and deploy applications that are flexible and easily maintainable. An important consideration in reaching this goal is the separation of business logic from presentation logic.[1] Developers use web template systems (with varying degrees of success) to maintain this separation.[1]

One difficulty in evaluating this separation is the lack of well-defined formalisms to measure when and how well it is actually met.[1] There are, however, fairly standard heuristics that have been borrowed from the domain of software engineering. These include 'inheritance' (based on principles of object-oriented programming); and the 'Templating and Generative programming', (consistent with the principles of MVC separation).[2] The precise difference between the various guidelines is subject to some debate, and some aspects of the different guidelines share a degree of similarity.[3]

[edit] Flexible presentation

One major rationale behind "effective separation" is the need for maximum flexibility in the code and resources dedicated to the presentation logic.[2] Client demands, changing customer preferences and desire to present a "fresh face" for pre-existing content often result in the need to dramatically modify the public appearance of web content while disrupting the underlying infrastructure as little as possible.

The distinction between "presentation" (front end) and "business logic" (infrastructure) is usually an important one, because:

*the presentation source code language may differ from other code assets;

*the production process for the application may require the work to be done at separate times and locations;

*different workers have different skill sets, and presentation skills do not always coincide with skills for coding business logic;

*code assets are easier to maintain and more readable when disparate components are kept separate and loosely coupled;[2]

Reusability

Not all potential users of web templates have the willingness and ability to hire developers to design a system for their needs. Additionally, some may wish to use the web but have limited or no technical proficiency. For these reasons, a number of developers and vendors have released web templates specifically for reuse by non-technical people. Although web template reusability is also important for even highly-skilled and technically experienced developers, it is especially critical to those who rely on simplicity and "ready-made" web solutions.

Such "ready-made" web templates are sometimes free, and easily made by an individual domestically. However, specialized web templates are sometimes sold online. Although there are numerous commercial sites that offer web templates for a licensing fee, there are also free and "open-source" sources as well.

[edit] Open source templates

The rise of the open source design movement has seen a slow but steady rise in the community of open source designers. Some sites offer open source templates in addition to other content.

As of this writing there are over 4000 unique templates available for modification and use by anyone under various open source licenses.[citation needed]

Blogger Service History

Blogger is a blog publishing system. It was created by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. Although its website is http://www.blogger.com/, the blogs it hosts are all subdomains of http://www.blogspot.com/.

Contents[hide]
[edit] History

*On August 23, 1999, Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs. As one of the earliest dedicated blog-publishing tools, it is credited for helping popularize the format.

*In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Google under undisclosed terms. The acquisition allowed premium features (for which Pyra had charged) to become free. About a year later, Pyra Labs' co-founder, Evan Williams, left Google.

*In 2004, Google purchased Picasa; it integrated Picasa and its photo sharing utility Hello into Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs.

*On May 9, 2004, Blogger introduced a major redesign, adding features such as web standards-compliant templates, individual archive pages for posts, comments, and posting by email.

*On August 14, 2006, Blogger launched its latest version in beta, codenamed "Invader", alongside the gold release. This migrated users to Google servers and included some new features.

*In December 2006, this new version of Blogger was taken out of beta.

*By May 2007, Blogger had completely moved over to Google operated servers.

*In October 2008, Turkey blocked access to Blogger. [1][verification needed]

Blogger was ranked 16 on the list of top 50 domains in terms of number of unique visitors in 2007. [2][dated info]
[edit] Redesign

As part of the Blogger redesign in 2006, all blogs associated with a user's Google Account were migrated to Google servers. Blogger claims that the service is now more reliable because of the quality of the servers.[3]

Along with the migration to Google servers, several new features were introduced, including label organization, a drag-and-drop template editing interface, reading permissions (to create private blogs) and new Web feed options. Furthermore, blogs are updated dynamically, as opposed to rewriting HTML files.
[edit] Integration

*The Google Toolbar has a feature called "BlogThis!" which allows toolbar users with Blogger accounts to post links directly to their blogs.

*"Blogger for Word" is a free add-in for Microsoft Word. This add-in allows users to save a Microsoft Word Document directly to a Blogger blog, as well as edit their posts both on- and offline. As of January 2007[update], Google says "Blogger for Word is not currently compatible with the new version of Blogger", and they state no decision has been made about supporting it with the new Blogger.[4] However, Microsoft Office 2007 adds native support for a variety of blogging systems, including Blogger.

*Blogger supports Google's AdSense service as a way of generating revenue from running a blog.
*Blogger offers multiple author support, making it possible to establish group blogs.

*Blogger offers a template editing feature, which allows users to customize the Blogger template.[5]

*Windows Live Writer, a standalone app of the Windows Live suite, publishes directly to Blogger.

What is Google Adsense?

Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant, unobtrusive Google ads on their website's content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your users are looking for on your site, you'll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages. Learn more about AdSense for content.

It's also a way for web site publishers to provide Google search to their site users, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages. Find out more about AdSense for search.

The program is free, and combines pay-per-click and pay-per-impression advertising - meaning you get paid for valid clicks on the ads on your site or search results pages as well as impressions on your content pages. So go ahead and try this program. If you comply with our program policies, just complete our online application and select either or both of AdSense for content pages and AdSense for search. One application gets you approved for both AdSense and AdSense for search - you can decide to use any combination of these products on your pages.
We'll review your application and follow up with an email within 2-3 days. If you are accepted into the program, you can log in to your new account and get the HTML code to insert into your webpages.

Keep in mind that participation in AdSense requires you to have a website. If you don't have one, you can sign up for a free blog at http://www.blogger.com/ or create and publish useful, attractive webpages using Google Page Creator, at pages.google.com.

Guide for Making Money Online with Blogging

Obviously writing good posts and writing frequently are important, but so is ensuring that when the traffic arrives you are ready to take advantage. I’ve tried to condense into one post all the advertising schemes, site modifications and SEO tweaks I’ve made on my blogging journey that have allowed me to generate a $180K annual salary in just twelve months.

Affiliate Schemes

=)
TNX:

A new network that is taking the blogging world by storm. Not only does it offer an amazing way for publishers to sell contextual links on their site, it also has one of the best referral schemes available

Amazing scheme that allows you to make money directly by completing offers, but also through a brilliant referral scheme - you even get paid for the referrals that your referrals signup. Payout per offer ranges between $1-35 per offer and you get 75% for offers you complete directly, and up to 30% of your referrals earnings.

Advertising Networks

=)Google Adsense:

The most popular scheme for bloggers to generate money from their site. The scheme works by serving contextual advertising so a high click-through rate (CTR) is acheivable thanks to ads being served that are relevant to your content. A very generous revenue share of approximately 60-80% is also given

Another popular scheme with bloggers and for many bloggers it is their biggest earner. Adding your site to Text Link Ads is easy and depending on your Page Rank and traffic up to $300 per month can be earned. One of the advantages of the scheme is that most advertisers automatically renew their campaigns each month

ReviewMe’s marketplace of advertisers is growing each month who want to pay web authors will review your product or service on their Web site. Payments vary between $50-500 per review, and some bloggers regularly write a couple of reviews each month

If you have a product related blog then adding Chitika eMiniMalls to your site could prove a better move than adding Adsense units. eMiniMalls show product offers from Chitika’s product partners, and remember that Adsense now allow you to contextualise these links

Vizu Answers is an innovative, reader-friendly way to monetize your Web site traffic through the addition of Polls. The polls can be formatted to match your own content and all traffic stays within your site. Typical CPMs are $1.50-3.50

Only sites with over 200k page impressions a month can join the Intellitxt network that adds in-line adverts to your site. If you can get accepted then these links can be quite lucrative. The Intellitxt team are quite slow with processing applications, but being referred can speed up this process. If you want to be referred please email admin@connectedinternet.co.uk

Again a minimum traffic level of 200K page impressions is required, but if you can hit this level of traffic Tribal Fusion is a good scheme to join as payments are CPM not CPC, with rates of up to $5 achievable depending on where adverts are placed .

Optimising Income & Traffic

Here is a selection of posts I have written over the last 2 years that will help you increase your traffic and advertising income. More posts can be found in the Blogging Tips, Making Money Online and Problogging categories.

Adsense Secret Tips

Layout Editor

Positioning:

You need to add your Adsense links right in the heart of your template or right in the heart of your content.

Link Units:

Since the introduction of Google Adsense "link units", we can now add what looks like a "menu system" to compliment our menu system within our website. This is HUGE. Have you ever just clicked on a website and kept clicking on the menu links? I know we all have. By adding a "Google link units" to your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought possible. Try adding the link units near the top for better performance and try creating your link units to match the color of your menu system in place. Once in a while I find myself clicking on a menu link unit without even realizing it which in turn gives more money to the website owner.

Leaderboards & Skyscrapers:

These may very well be your "bread & butter". I only say this because of the sheer size of these ads units. The best place to add these ad units is obvious; Straight across the very top of your website (leaderboards), and straight down the side of your template (skyscrapers). Anywhere else may not look proper within your template and may look unprofessional.

Square & Rectangle Ad Units:

These are great to compliment the mass amount of content within your website and also within your recommended resources. You want to compliment your content, you don't want Adsense to BE your content because this will look poor on your part. Square and rectangular units are great to use within articles posted on your website or within your link resources. Try adding your Adsense boxes above your resource links within a page to give your Adsense account that added extra exposure.

Google Adsense is perhaps the easiest way to attract advertisers from across the globe to your blog. Just submit your blog to Google for approval. If Google likes what it sees, it will place contextual ads linking to products likely to appeal to the readers. Each time a reader clicks a link, the advertiser pays Google a small fee, and Google splits that with you.

The next interesting question - How to Make Money with Google Adsense ? Here are The best Google Adsense Tips and Tricks for making more money (profit) from Google adsense program.

a. Strictly follow the rules mentioned in Adsense policies. You will always earn more revenue from Adsense by playing it clean.

b. Never modify the Google Adsense HTML code.

c. Don't ask your friends or visitors to click on your Google ads. Do not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. Don't label the Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements.".

d. Don't click on your own ads - Google is much smarter than you think. You should not reload your pages excessively. If you are testing your website layout with Google adsense, follow some precautions. Or you can use the unofficial Google Adsense Sandbox Tool that is accessible from Firefox, IE and other browsers to see what kind of Google ads will be served based on content (website address URL) or keywords.

e. Don't place ads in pop-up windows, error pages or even empty pages.

f. Don't start a "adsense asbestos" or "home equity loan rates" website merely to make money from accidental clicks (accidence). You will never make money out these "made-for-adsense-only" websites. Instead, write on topics what you are passionate about. Don't waste your money on high-paying adsense keywords lists.

g. For short articles, CTR is best when ads are placed just above the content.

h. For long articles, CTR improves if ads are placed somewhere in middle of the content - visitors read the long content and then they are looking for more resources.

i. Use Text Ads instead of Image Ads as users get more options. If you still want to display image ads, consider ad formats that support image ads - Choose either the 300x250 medium rectangle or the 160x600 wide skyscraper - or both, if you display multiple ad units on a page.

j. Google Ads without background color and borders always perform better. Make the border color and background color same as your page background color.

k. Always put ads above the main fold. Make sure that the ad unit with the highest clickthrough rate is the first instance of the ad code that appears in the HTML. Since the first ad unit is always filled before the rest, you want to make sure that ad unit is located in the best placement on your page.

l. Try setting the ad link URL color to a lighter shade. If your text is black, you may make the adlink as light gray.

m. Go Wide - The large rectangle is the best paying adsense format (336x280) - The Google Adsense Publisher team also feels that the best formats are the wider ones - the ad formats that contain the widest individual ads. Try using the 336x280 large rectangle, 300x250 medium rectangle, or 160x600 wide skyscraper.

n. Placing images next to ads or above ads does help in attracting user attention.

o. Blend AdLinks with other navigation links or place horizontal adlinks at the top of your webpage. AdSense publishers are permitted to click on link unit topics on their web pages, provided that they do not click on any Google ads on the resulting page.

p. Organize an Adsense Party for your friends and colleagues - Request them to navigate your website, watch their activity - it will provide vital clues about which regions on your website draw more user attention. Try putting ads near those areas.

q. You can put upto 3 adsense units on a page. Try putting a large skyscraper on the right navigation sidebar of your website. That area is close to the browser scrollbar. You can also add 2 AdSense for search boxes, 1 adlink unit and 1 referral button per product (i.e., 1 AdSense referral button and 1 Firefox plus Google Toolbar referral button).

r. The first few lines of your content are an important factor for determining what Ads are served on your webpage. That's the right place to put keywords in bold (strong or tags) or header tags (h1, h2, etc).

s. Always select the setting to open Google Adsense search box results in a new browser window, so you won't lose your visitors. Click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox and this add target="google_window" to your form tag.

t. Maximum people think the search box is on the top right corner. So you know where to put it.

u. Don't syndicate full content. If people can read everything from the newsreader window itself, why would they visit your website where your ads are.

v. Use URL channels to determine performance of individual pages. I track my most popular pages with Google Analytics, Statcounter and create a channel for each of the URL. You can even track Adsense Clicks with Analytics

w. For low CTR pages, try changing titles or adding more content to get better focused ads

x. Block low paying advertisers with Filters. Why to loose a visitor for 0.01 cents. Use Overture or Google Adwords Keywords tool to discover keywords that are less popular with advertisers.

y. The AdSense for search Top Queries report shows you what your users are looking for, by listing the 25 most common searches conducted through your AdSense for search boxes. Use this report to identify additional topics to add to your site, or to keep track of your most sought-after information. Focus and improve that content.

z. Not everyone has a RSS reader. Use RSS to Email services like FeedBlitz, Bloglet or Rmail to let users subscribe to your blog by email.

Remember, you are the best judge when it comes to choosing ad formats. Even Google doesn't offer the best advise always. For instance, in the visual heat map, Google suggests that webmasters are best served by positioning ads on the upper left-hand side of a Web page. But on the Google homepage, you will find ads on the far right.

Profit from your Blog

Blogs can be real money-producers with AdSense™. You just have to know how and what: how to get AdSense to your blog and what to do to make it work at maximum capacity.

Blogs can be for profit or non-profit but most bloggers blog for the purpose of making
money .

There may be some contents published to simply provide an outlet for voicing out the bloggers’ opinions and share their thoughts.
However, the general population of bloggers has the intention of profiting financially. Fortunately, there are several methods of profiting from a blog and applying these methods can help you gain money.

The Advertisements

Selling space for advertisers is one of the most common ways to profit from a blog. Since blogs that have a considerable amount of traffic can make income with ad sales, make sure that you have a target audience. The reason why bloggers choose to sell advertising is that it is a passive form of income once the traffic has progressed. Although it takes work to look for advertisers and maintain the ads on the blog, those who can achieve it can gain reasonable amount of money with the ads.

Compared to other forms of profiting from a blog, selling advertisement space can be one of the most consistent revenue streams. If you are able to maintain your ad slots filled, you should have a very good idea of just how much you can make every month.

On the negative side, selling ads requires you to have some kind of established traffic. Traffic is important because it draws interest from potential advertisers. You might find it hard to sell an ad space without traffic and it will most likely not produce much revenue. Additionally, the blog must have a target audience in order to achieve the maximum amount of cash for advertisement space. Remember that advertisers are more likely to pay if your target audience is a match to theirs.Affiliate programs are also a major resource of profits for several bloggers. Affiliate programs are excellent in a sense that they enable you to have the opportunity to make money even if your blog has a small audience. However, one bad side to affiliate programs is that there can be instances where you cannot make any money at all.

Newly created blogs feature affiliate ads most of the time compared to selling space directly to advertisers. Since selling ads is hard to do without much traffic, affiliate programs are perfect for new blogs. More so, they can be easily maintained and only take very little time.

Promoting and Premium Content

Bloggers who are service providers at the same time have an excellent opportunity to look for clients and increase their rates. Maintaining a blog that focuses on your area of expertise can help you easily become a recognized authority in your field. Additionally, it can aid potential clients to find you. You can also benefit from the increase in demand of your services and improved reputation that you build, which enable you to charge more for your services.

Aside from promoting your services, selling premium contents are also excellent ways to profit from a blog. Blogs are a massive source of information and remember that not everything has to be free. There are bloggers and business that attained success by selling some of their work. There are blogs that sell memberships on their Web sites. Although selling premium content is possible in any field, you must have the capability to give something to the reader that is worth paying for.

Blog Definitions

A blog is (short for weblog) is a personal online journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption.

Blogs are defined by their format: a series of entries posted to a single page in reverse-chronological order.

Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or reflect the purpose of the Web site that hosts the blog.

Topics sometimes include brief philosophical musings, commentary on Internet and other social issues, and links to other sites the author favors, especially those that support a point being made on a post.

The author of a blog is often referred to as a blogger. Many blogs syndicate their content to subscribers using RSS, a popular content distribution tool.

Great Ideas for Blogging

23 Great Ideas For Blog Posts

After you have been blogging for a while, sometimes you run out of inspiration. Here are some ideas to get you going again.

1)Write a book review

Read a good book about your topic and write a review on it. As a bonus, you can link to the book on Amazon.com and get some commissions for selling the book.

2)Review a product.

Pick a product that people in your niche will be interested in. Make sure it is something you use yourself. There are a lot of products you can link to on Amazon.com, or look for another affiliate program.

3)Review a popular blog or website about your topic.

If your readers are not familiar with your subject, or if they are new to the web, they may not know about all the resources that are available. They will be happy that you told them about it.

4)Make a list of available resources.

Find a lot of good, helpful sites about your topic. Make a list of them with a short description of each, and of course link to each one. This is the type of post that people like to bookmark or link to.

5)Explain something about your subject that might be confusing to newbies.

This is the type of information that people could be searching for, and they just might find your site when they do the search.

6)Tell why or how you first got interested in this topic.

This will let your natural enthusiasm show through, and it will encourage beginners, because you will be recalling when you were a beginner too.

7)Do a review of a relatively unknown but good blog in your niche.

Your readers will be glad to discover a new blog, and the author might be so happy for the attention that they link to your blog too.

8)Take a stand.

Take something that is controversial and tell how you feel about it. Just be careful to be respectful to both sides. You don’t want it to turn into a flame war. Besides, it is just more professional to state your opinion in a calm, objective way.

9)Tell about some mistake that you made and what you learned from it.

This will help your readers to avoid making the same mistake, and will make you seem more human to them.

10)Do a case study.

This is always very popular, because it shows some real-life application of principles. For example, for a gardening blog, you could do a case study on your own garden - what you did, what the results were, etc. Pictures would be great with this too.

11)Conduct an experiment and tell the results.

This is another very popular format, especially if the experiment is about something that people have always wondered about.

12)Do an analysis of something.

I think it was John Chow’s analysis of the biggest known Adsense earners that really made him popular. Of course, he came up with a catchy title for his post, which helped it spread even further.

13)Find some offbeat or weird website on your topic and link to it.

If you do this once in a while, it will lighten up your blog with some humor or human interest.

14)Find a good video about your topic on YouTube, and embed it in your post.

Add some commentary of your own. A video is a nice change of pace.

15)If you are a little more adventurous, create your own video post.

The blog 45n5 does this often, and it helps his unique personality to show through.

16)Be different. Do something unexpected. State something which goes against popular opinion.

The mention of
45n5 made me think of this. It is something he does often, but he seems to do it in a good-humored way so that people don’t take too much offense.

17)Find a big topic and do a series of posts about it.

People seem to love this. At least, they will keep coming back if they get interested in the series.

18)Run a poll. After it is done, discuss the results.

I have never actually done this, but it seems to be popular. People will probably come back to see the results of the poll.

19)Interview someone and post the interview on your blog.

If you pick someone interesting to interview, you could get a lot of links. The interviewee will probably link to you too. I think people often are more agreeable to interviews than you would think, especially if you don’t waste too much of their time.

20)Take something technical and explain it in a step-by-step way.

It helps to use screenshots or pictures of some kind. This works for other things besides computer stuff, too. For example, in gardening, how to plant a bulb. I know a picture would help me, because I always forget which end of the bulb is supposed to point up.

21)Tell about a personal experience.

This is often the best kind of post (if it relates to your subject matter). It makes your point more real, and people always have an easier time of making something interesting if it is a story about themselves. Just make sure it relates to your topic in some way. People don’t want to read about your cat, unless it is a cat blog! If it is a cat blog, the more cat stories, the better.

22)Use humor.

Cartoons are great. Once I posted a cartoon on my site (the cartoonist said it was ok, as long as you linked back). Somebody linked to my post on StumbleUpon, and I got visitors for a long time afterward. People just love cartoons!
